Background

Rogue Climber is Imaginary Game Studios second project after Meticulous. Whereas the goal of Meticulous is to make something useful to gamers, the goal with Rogue Climber is simple - make something fun. And what feature could be a better target for building fun games than locomotion?

There was a time before battle passes, season passes, and loot boxes. Before even horse armor. It was a simpler time. But the experiences we had with those games, the Mario 64s, the Crash Bandicoots, the Spyros - those were magic. Getting to explore worlds with all those unique movement abilities was magic, and now we want to share that magic with players today.

We’re a small team. Meticulous was a solo-development project, and Rogue Climber started out that way too. Rogue Climber is our first step towards building a modular framework for all of the future worlds we’re going to build, and it starts with making movement magical.

Description

You've only got a short time to climb. An army of enemies and traps are waiting to stop you. Manage your equipment, hone your build, and master your platforming techniques to climb higher than anyone before you. You think you've got what it takes? I don't think so.

Rogue Climber is a game about moving fast and dying trying. The complex movement mechanics include wall runs, jump combos, blink dashes, ground pounds, and ledge boosts - all the tools needed for players to become magical parkour gods (and goddesses). Position yourself well, and you can use blink dashes to teleport through obstacles - or, queue up blink dashes and save them for later while you’re in the middle of a jump combo.

The game features five chapters, each with their own unique theme. Each theme features their own obstacles, enemies, traps, and equipment. Once players have completed each theme in separately, the Free Play and Custom Seed modes allow you to experience infinite, procedurally generated levels that mix and match the themes together to create totally new, unique experiences. Special mutators cause levels to change in dramatic ways, like adding low gravity, or turning all the enemies into Gobbos.

As you play, you’ll earn currency to buy over 20 upgrades to your character’s platforming abilities, called Seals. In most games, once you level up past a certain point, earlier stages can become trivial - that’s not going to happen here. There are limits to how many upgrades you can bring with you, depending on the difficulty of the stage. Players must craft the best build they can with the upgrades they’re allowed. Once you’re in game, collect crystals to increase the power of your equipped upgrades. Get enough, and you just might stand a chance. 🙂
